BJP’s candidate for the Pilibhit constituency in Uttar Pradesh, Varun Gandhi have been making hateful and dangerous remarks on the campaign trail. Worse, instead of condemning the utterances, Tarun Vijay, head of BJP’s think-tank defended the remarks as being borne out of innocence and fear under which the local Hindus live in. Mukhtar Abbas Naqvi, BJP vice-president went a step further and blamed his remarks on Congress!
BJP vice-president Mukhtar Abbas Naqvi said: “Varun Gandhi’s comments are a clear manifestation of the culture he learnt from the Congress. The words used by him clearly shows his past Congress connection”.
In an election meet Mr Gandhi targeted Muslims by shouting “This is not a hand (Congress symbol), it is the power of the lotus (BJP symbol). It will cut the head of… Jai Shri Ram,” his attack directed towards Muslims. At another meeting, the PTI report said, he said: “If anyone raises a finger towards Hindus or if someone thinks that Hindus are weak and leaderless, if someone thinks that these leaders lick our boots for votes, if anyone raises a finger towards Hindus, then I swear on Gita that I will cut that hand.”
Mr Gandhi’s dangerous utterances and the subsequent denial-cum-defense by BJP has once again made the secular-minded Indians suspicious of its agenda. BJP would do well to cancel Mr Gandhi’s candidature from the Pilibhit constituency and nominate someone who, if elected, will fight for all the citizens of Pilibhit not just the Hindus.

completely separate religion from Indian state and politics. You can’t condemn Varun and go blind in case of tytler or sanjay dutt. You can’t demand cow slaughter be allowed but have all kinds of subsidies and tax and interest discounts based on religion. Once you mix religion and politics. you will not
have control. Taliban is an unavoidable product/price. Now is the time to amend our failed definition of secularism. Hope commonsense won’t refuse to
understand this.

There is nothing mystic about diversity of india. It is the way nature is ,diverse. Hope everybody respects and rejoices the diversity of nature and life(all it’s beings).Not just devour what is not like us(human) on slightest pretext.
I definitely condemn Varun Gandhi’s remarks. They are an abomination. They are anti-Indian and un-Indian.
The silver-lining in the cloud hopefully is that Varun is in trouble with the law, EC etc.
I’d like to think that this highlights just one of the many differences between a Hindu-majority state and a Muslim-majority one. In Muslim majority states, communalism IS the law. At least in our country, its only people at most who are communal.
