Two Poems On Gujarat Violence

by Ashok Gupta

Postcard From Gujarat: Anand Gandhi

In the memory of 2000 men women and children killed in the state led genocide of Gujarat in 2002 and 200,000 who lost their homes and dignity.

Shame

I should be ashamed
of raising issues that divide
-they say.

But how can I forget
those they killed
mutilated and those they left
still hiding their nakedness.

I will shout from the rooftops
make memorials of poems
I will draw from the eyes
of the killers
not blood, but tears.

Run Amina Run

The dead are never at rest, especially at night
Sometimes, I hear him moving upstairs
bolting doors, moving furniture
against the doors to make a barricade
I cannot sleep
Other days there is a heavy silence
Orange silence with only a crackling sound
and an acrid smell
Suddenly he cries out aloud

Run Amina Run!

I tell him that the crowds have gone
years ago
I no longer hurt
and he is dead
but he keeps screaming
They are coming !

Run Amina Run !

  1. Abdus Samad Shaikh says:

This alphabetical nazam is based on day to day happenings in the country. The Gujarat violence involving two communities was the product of extremism. There is a rule of jungle run by some people. Their aim is to create trouble and never to compromise to solve the burning question of hatred. Since the independence of the country the rule of the country in the hands of some of the politician who are for want of votes in their favor creating all sorts of violence through their paid party workers. I have tried to use all alphabets to make appropriate sentence, however I could not get any word to begin with W, therefore I said “W se na bani bat to ab bat karlay” forget the past and start now your communication for unity and for the progress of the country.

    ALPHABETICAL NAZAM

A-isay fisadi hain jo na the kabhi pahlay
B-kav hain voh,jo hain bahar se oojlay

The people who are trouble makers, they were not that type before, but to make trouble is their profession. You offer them bribe and they will do any thing for you. By look they are simple and innocents

C-thon ko larate hain jinkay ghar faqay chalay
D-hilay kartay hain jaib oonkay mafad ke badlay

They first choose the poor and simple people who do not have money to run their house. They make them fight each other. For their own benefits they rob them. It is common in big cities the rowdy or gangsters are busy in collecting money from shopkeepers or from lariwalas

E-an ke hathon mein jab tak na jam milay
F-surda rahtay hain jahan tak na jam milay

Unless they receive a glass of wine they remain restless and make others restless.

G-bhar ke ooratay hain ghubar aman ke badlay
H-hy aisi zindgi jis me na koi dua milay

Instead of peace they create trouble to their satisfaction. What is the use of such life where you will not get duaa from others?

I-shamat gujarat ki nafraton ki aag jalay
J-aisay jungle ka ho raj na koi insaf chalay

Gujarat is a victim of hatred; it seems there is rule of jungle where there is no justice to sufferer

K-aisay qabool ho oonhain dosti, dosti ke badlay
L-aan kartay hain sabhi dushmani ka dosti ke badlay

They do not accept hand of friendship; they just propagate enmity instead of friendship

M-aale bad se milaingay sub ko apnay seelay
N-waqat hy jo apnay gunahon ki toba karlay

With illegal income they will sure get their punishments of their bad deeds. This is now the right time for them to ask forgiveness for their sins

O-aur had se na barho ab betho bhi nichlay
P-it jatay hain aksar zalim zulm ke badlay

Do not go beyond the limit and be humane, because such people always get punishments in exchange for their cruelty

Q-un barasti hy aag nafraton ki mohabbat ke badlay
R-am se na sotay hain gharib chat ke talay

Why igniting hatred instead of love, poor people unable to sleep under their roof. They are always afraid of any miscreant

S-aisay the jo zalim sub gaye hain zamin talay
T-ka na koi bhi jab mot aaee oonkay galay

Cruel people like that all gone under grave when the death strike on them

U-oon na kuchlo aazadi apnay pairon talay
V-ran na karo bastian apnay mafad ke badlay

You got the freedom of your country with much struggle, therefore it is in your own good not to crush the freedom under your feet and do not destroy the population for own benefits

W-say na bani baat koi, to ab baat karlay
X-ar hotay hain baat karnay se shiqvay v geelay

If you have not talked before and your purpose had not been solved, so forget the past and solve your problems now by mutual communication. Remember that with friendly talk all your problems will be solved. It is the lack of communication that keeps you divided.

Y-nadani ke her taraf hadison ki aandhi chalay
Z-idee hain hatilay hain na baithaingay kabhi nichlay

Have some understandings with peaceful mind and do not spread hostility with stupidity. But you have a habit of stubbornness and will not learn to behave
Better than the entire world, is our India
we are its nightingales and this is our garden
That mountain most high; neighbor to the skies
It is our sentinel; it is our protector
A thousand rivers play in its lap,
Gardens they sustain, the envy of the heavens is ours
Faith does not teach us to harbor grudges between us
we are all Indians and India is our homeland

W-say na bani baat koi, to ab baat karlay
X-ar hotay hain baat karnay se shiqvay v geelay
