“These Muslims eat here, live here and after death claim our land where they get buried on our land but raise voice of Paksitan Zindabad and Osama Bin Laden Zindabad”, said BJP MLAs Eknath Khadse and Shobha Tai in the Maharashtra assembly during the budget session made the above mentoned comments.
This won’t be tolerated, said Khadse, who further alleged that during the rally against defamatory cartoons in Mumbai, the Muslims raised Pakistan Zindabad slogan, turned the City green with their flags and wreaked havoc on the traffic.
Also, he added “Paida yahan hote hain, muft ka paani peetey hain aur yahan ki hawa muft mein khate hain aur marne ke baad hamari dedh meter ki jagan bhi lete hain”.
Now what you will do for such statements. These things hurt. How can elected representatives be so much against any community or section. Don’t these have any social interation with Muslims or any friends that they never give a thought before making such speeches.
I shudder to think how many people in India share this sentiment. How much poisoned are some people’ minds. And is there no way these people can be tackled or action taken against such spread of hate. Time and agains such speeches are made and this anti-Muslim rhetoric just not invoke any criticism from the media. In fact, such stories are blacked out altogether. This story was reported in Sahara daily newspaper amongst others which I read.

This is sick. So much vitriol. Not to mention the skewed perception (“hamari jagan”), the outright lies (“muft ka paani”), the gross exaggerations, the sweeping generalizations …
To be sure, there are some Hindus in India who think along the same lines (particulary in places where the communal relations have turned sour – like Mumbai, Gujarat etc.). Thankfully, people in the rest of the country are not so biased (or are not biased at all).
I think the major problem is the absence of first-hand interaction. Most Hindus – particularly in North India – don’t come into much contact with Muslims. Therefore, their perceptions of Muslims comes from popular stereotypes or old anecdotes (e.g, memories of the 1947 riots). In such a situation, these people easily fall prey to the sangh parivar propaganda.
On the other hand, in places where the Muslims and Hindus are in regular contact – for example in South India or in Varanasi (because of the silk saree industry) – the two communities understand each other much better. They have first hand experience of each other, and know that the “other” is a human being just like themselves.
I feel the only solution is more interaction at a person-to-person level. If one has friends from the other community and is familiar with their lifestyles, their natures. their joys, sorrows, struggles and achievements etc., then it is *extremely* unlikely that one would believe in any stereotypes or false propaganda about the other community.
Peace to all, and take care.
Yes. I have also come to the same conclusion after many years. Interaction at levels is needed. Yes loonies are in all communities, it is not just Hindus, Muslims too have fair number of them. But there are much more sane people who need to know the people of other communities and make them friends.
Adnan and others,
I have created a website where Indians of different religions can interact with each other and get to know the others better. I am hopeful that this will help somewhat in alleviating the problem of stereotypes and the effect of propaganda.
The address is: http://first-hand-indian.com
I had wanted to create such a website for a few weeks now, and the discussion in this article only served to make up my mind for good. I hope you (and many others) find it useful.
Take care,
Rohit
Well said Rohit!
I completely agree with you.
All Muslims are not demons I know that. All Hindus are not demons, you know that. But how many Muslims and Hindus know each other? Thanks for your efforts.
Jai Hind
well rohit,
I agree with you that the phrase used by these leaders were inappropriate (â€?hamari jaganâ€?), (â€?muft ka paaniâ€?) as so on but do you consider these Muslims using the words “Paksitan Zindabad and Osama Bin Laden Zindabadâ€? proper. I am from Gujarat and have come across loads of Muslims you share such kind of thinking. I have seen the riots and seen the people suffering majority of them innocent and I do say that the majority affected were the muslims and I really do pity on them but then again this was to happen ….
Why is it that they dont change their attitude ? The very basic funda is that these people have to change and mix with the non muslims which they seldom do.why do they have to differentciate themselves from the rest. Dont you think its time that they change themselves for their own betterment ……
I come from a state (Kerala) where about 27% of the population is Muslim. I went to school with many of them. Had and have Muslim family friends. We live in very mixed villages.
My experience with them does not make me think that they accept me and my belief as equal. There are very few who think that the religious belief of my family is equally valid as that of theirs.
Only very few of them send their daughters to professions that we send our girls to. They mostly try to be separate in all the ways they can be- they try to speak a different version of the language (dialect), dress differently from the society and where ever possible live in separate localities.
Many of the guys I went to school with now look different- display a beard and wear different type of cloths than we used to when we were young. When we all got married we attended each others marriage, used to visit each other.
Now their wives are in veil- yes the black ones and I do not want my children to interact with them any more. I sense a condescending view in them about our beliefs or lack of it.
Their parents loved us. Accepted us children. They even exposed us to their belief system. I never felt foreign in their presence. They were friends with our parents.
But a lot has changed for sure.
Well i’m Pakistani and have to honestly admit that i couldn’t give a damn about Indian Muslims or whatever comes with them!.Listen,Pak ain’t perfect but neither is India furthermore we’ve never asked for your Muslims to support us in anything!!.Actually India has been obsessed with Pakistan since the day our country was established which in-terms of size is ten times smaller yet continues to give all you people nightmares!!!.To me an Indian is just that regardless of religious belief and neither do i ever want to break bread with any of you people!.
Imran
I keep hearing that India is obsessed with Pakistan and I thought Pakistan is obsessed with India.
We have much bigger China to deal with- trade growing, joint universities being established, Indian companies have established bases there etc.
The only exchange we have with Pakistan is troubles in Kashmir. Earlier Punjab that is over now.
I have similar feelings for Pakistan. If we can have an air tight border with Pakistan- not even air comes across- we Indians would prefer that.
Especially many of us who come from the south of the country we do not even share same language with our own Indians in North, much less we have any feelings for Pakistanis or Afghanistanis or anyone else out there.
My first interaction with Pakistanis was after coming to the US. It has completely changed my perception of Pakistan and Pakistanis. Despite the constant war with Pakistan for about half a century now, their warmth and friendliness towards Indians is unmistakable, which is reciprocated by Indians in equal measure. The place where I live has a sizable Indian community and a very small Pakistani community. They do not have big cultural events like we do because of their less numbers. However, they compensate the lack of opportunities for their cultural events by participating in Indian events with gusto. It is in fact touching and ironic at the same time to see a Pakistani kid performing in musical event held to celebrate Indian republic day. Whatever the governments of Pakistan and India might say about each other, I know I can trust my Pakistani friends here as much as any other Indian.
It’s a two way sword. First of all we should condemn any Indian Muslim who shouts the slogans of ‘Pakistan Zindabad’. There are handful of those illiterate zealouts who know nothing about their religion or Pakistan but would vent out anything in religious zeal (which too is mostly to show, very little to follow). These people will always continue to give ammunition to BJP and their allies for propoganda. It has been done to the extent that we have been put against the wall and we have to be defensive everytime being required to prove our nationalism.
Secondly, what the BJP leaders say is just the tip of the iceberg. So much venom is not poured even in public places. I have personally witnessed so much bitterness against Muslims when people would utter it on public places, ignorant of my religion. This is hard reality, we have to live with it and put efforts to counter this. The platforms such as this blog and other media can help.
Lastly, no matter how much any fanatic might condemn Indian Muslims. We are proud to be Indian nationals and will continue to do the same. Our nationalism is not dependent on their opinion. I live outside India and have the options to migrate to so many countries in the world. But I deeply desire to come back to India because I love my country.
Good work hase been carried out over thouse years .calling them invaders is not a fair comment
you can call british ,franch ,dauch ivader IVADERS, they came used our land took what they wanted and went back to their countrys .mughals came like most of us,from somewhere in the world and setled for centures DID NOT TRY TO RUN AWAY EVEN ON BAD TIMES. Regard less where they come from lived like indian they died like indian and should be treated like indian.
well i have seen muslims in army ,navy, airforce,,and police,,they r good soldiers,,,,and love their country,,,,but there is a small point of islamisation of politics,,BJP as a political party has muslim leaders,, and it they who installed APJ ABDUL KALAM AS PRESIDENT ,,,IF ANY ONE CRITICIZZES PAKISTANI FLAGS BEING FLOWN IN COUNTRY WHAT IS HARM IN THAT,,,,,,,the ppl who do it should be ghettoed to Pakistan,,,,,,,Pakistan is a failed stsate,,Bangladesi,,Pakistani muslims throng our country and r a bad influence to our muslim brothers,,,WE NEED TO STOP EVERY EXACHANGE CULTURAL,,POLITICAL WITH COUNTRY LIKE PAK WHICH S CAUSE OF QUITE A LOT OF our problems,,,stop these stupid bus jounrneys,,trade,,or exchanges,,,till terrorism stops,,let us live like two different countries ,,,,,,
