King Abdullah has offered to renovate the historical Jama Masjid of Delhi before his upcoming trip to India. According to this article in Reuters, the Indian Foreign Ministry has reacted cautiously but the chief cleric of the mosque, Syed Ahmed Bukhari has jumped to the offer. The article states,
The chief cleric of the Jama Masjid, built by Mughal emperor Shahjahan in 1656, said any rejection of the Saudi offer could upset officials in Riyadh.
“The government should welcome the offer. A rejection can be construed as insulting by the Saudis,” chief cleric Syed Ahmed Bukhari told Reuters. “The government should think about this.”
“upset officials in Riyadh”, hello, which era are you living in Mr. Bukhari?
Why are you playing the Muslim card, again?
He goes on,
Bukhari said India should accept the offer quickly. “I can’t understand the unnecessary objections,” he said.
It is not difficult to understand why Syed Ahmed Bukhari is over-enthusiastic about accepting the proposal. Apart from the evident gains, it would help him to establish his rapport among the Saudi benefactors.
I just hope that the government of India does not accept the proposal thinking that it would help its cause among the minority voters. It won’t and it shouldn’t.
