The HT reports
THREE SENIOR officials of the Indian Police Service (IPS) were arrested by the Gujarat Police on Tuesday on the charge of murder for their alleged role in the killing of a man described as a Lashkar-e-Tayyeba cadre in a fake encounter here in 2005.
Those arrested are Inspector General (border range) D.G. Vanzara, Superintendent of Police Rajkumar Pandayan of the state intelligence wing, and M.N. Dinesh, the SP of Rajasthan’s Alwar district.
The arrests were made by CID (Crime) in connection with the death of Sohrabuddin Sheikh, a Madhya Pradesh-based criminal allegedly killed in a gun battle on the outskirts of Ahmedabad on November 26, 2005 during a joint operation by Gujarat’s Anti-Terrorist Squad (ATS) and Rajasthan Police.
“The three have been arrested on murder charges, Additional Director General of Police (Intelligence) Sudhir Sinha said.

Yes. Just that cases need to be fought properly. Sohrabuddin’s family was financially well off, it seems, and that’s why they could go up to the Supreme Court and fight it till the very end.
Otherwise even in cases pertaining to vital issues that concern the entire Muslim community, often there is slackness and good lawyers are not hired.
Such encounters bring promotions to the police officers and often politically also they serve a lot of purpose. Hopefully we will see convictions in this case and at least there will be some fear amongst rogue cops. Otherwise the planning done to kill Sohrabuddin clearly shows the criminal bent of mind of certain officials of Gujarat police.
I am still unable to believe that they actually arrested in Gujarat of all places, on charges of killing a Muslim in a fake encounter! It just does not seem real. So I keep wondering what the real motives are? What brought about this situation. I hope its actually some redeeming quality somewhere within our system, but I’m skeptical.
It did not happen on its own. The Supreme Court forced the arrests of these officers. Expect more skeletons to come tumbling out of the cupboard in the future.
Modi has national level ambitions and would love to wash off the stains of 2002. No wonder his cops have suddenly discovered the virtue in rule of law.
PS Sorry for the prolonged hiatus guys.
thanks for the info, Girish.
There are wide mouthed criminals who claimed on media and in Parliament that Sohrabuddeen was not very good a person. We should take this comment seriously. Even if one is a criminal, the so called political party (just due to their presence in the Parliament)has the temerity to say so in public. this shows their lack of concern for humanism is general and for muslims in particular. Does it feel good when Police decides who is to punished to what extent? Same happened in case of the Anjelina Jolie case in Bombay. AN Rai, Police Commisioner accepted the so called apology of the actress entourage though it should have been some court in the city. Same is true for crimanals of Shiv Sena. They think that police can report, prosecute and execute in case muslims are involved. The recent lifting of ban on one of the book on historical rebelious Shivaji is case in point. Shiva Sena says that its a metter of belief and courts should not have ‘interfered’. Are the brightened minded not blinkering?!!?
