Riyazuddin: Captain Indian Basketball

Riyazuddin has been named the captain of Indian Basketball team. It is a great honour for any player to lead the national team.Riyazuddin

The achievement is no less than captaining the national cricket or hockey team but in our cricket-obsessed nation most of the other sports don’t even get a footnote in important newspapers.

The international championships are seldom reported. So it comes as no surprise that a game like Basketball that is immensely popular in other countries remains on the periphery in India.

Riyaz has captained the junior national team in the past and was vice-captain in the recently held Commonwealth Games. His performance has drawn the attention of the critics and is seen as a pivotal player for the future Basketball team of India.

It is a great achievement and the young lad is naturally delighted. For long he has been the leading scorer of the team. Congratulations Riyazuddin Qureshi and best of luck to the Indian team for Champions Cup at Kuwait that starts from June 3.

It is no surprise that a Muslim leads Indian basketball team. In India Muslims have got the opportunity to lead the national teams in several games in the past.
