So Kashmir gets a new Police Chief, what so special about this news? Well just look dig deeper and you will see that the only Muslim majority state of India that have been ruled by King, Prime Minsters, Chief Ministers, Governors and Military rule in its 60 year history do not have a administration that represent the people it is supposed to serve.

Look at these facts:

Since 1947, out of 24 Chief Secretaries only 8 have been from the Muslims.

From 1914, when Police Chief post was created by the Maharaja to 1979, no Muslim was able to reach this position of top cop in Kashmir. After 1979, two Muslims were able to ascend to this position.

Seven Director Generals (DG) and Five Additional Director Generals (ADG) are all non-Muslims. Four out of fifteen Inspector Generals (IG) are Muslims. Six out of 15 DIGs are Muslims

26 out of 87 SSPs are Muslims and out of 111 IPS officers, 33 are Muslims including one loaned from Bihar Cadre.

From MG 16-30 June 2007.

Is there something special about the post of police chief?
IIRC more than quarter of Jammu and Kashmir is Hindu while all CM’s have been Kashmiri speaking Muslims. Should Hindus not be the be the CM’s of the state in the same proportion, or is this communal logic to be applied selectively when it is to the advantage of Muslims.

Salim, Do you forget Karan Singh? Or Ajatshatru?
The kashmiri Muslims have not been responsible for plight of kashmiri pandits. You get everything wrong then. We still maintain good relationships.

RSS has never been involved in any violence and least BJP as a political party. They have muslim members and Muslim elected representatives. There are many Muslims who attend Shakas and RSS respects many Muslims as well. Can you say that for Let or Jem. In between Kashmiri Pandits have been suporters of National Conference in past and they have voted for congress in recent times. But yes I will agree they should support BJP and why they don’t do it comes as a surprise to me as well.

Btw , the Elite upper-class among Kashmiri Muslims , like the Omar Abdullahs and the Ghulam Nabi Azads , are very secular , Hindu-friendly , pro-Hindutva and looks after the Rights of Hindus. Only Mufti Sayeed is a bit pro-Pakistan , but that is to get votes.

Elites have interests, religious passions are for the riff-raf, and Mutfi is a first class fanatic, he had instigated riots against Hindus in Anantanag.

Only the so-called “nomadic” or “agricultural” elements in Kashmiri Muslim society , like Gujjars , Bakarwals , etc. , who are poor , support Pakistan.

This does not square with my experience.
Barakwals main identity is that of a bakarwal, they have no use for any nationalism, neither of the “ummah” type or the India Pakistan type.

Gujjars are definitely more pro Indian than a kashmiri muslim, but I remember clearly when Rajesh Pilot visited Kashmir many years he was hugged and feted for being a gujjar boy who made it big.

And the lowest of the low in the kashmiri social hierarchy are the boat dwelling Hanjis.

^^ Bibek , ironically , Caste System is present even aming Kasmiri Muslims , and yet ironically , the ” lowest of the low ” Kashmiri boat-men are the “icon” and “symbol” of Kashmiri Tourism. What a farce !

^ And you call Mufti Mohammad Sayeed a “fanatic” , yet it was under the “secular” Omar Abdullah’s reign that thousands of Kashmiri Pandits had been killed and displaced.

Dude
The house boats of Kashmir and their boat men/women are the icons of Indian tourism :) . Its high time that the Kashmiri youth leave the pointlessness of separatism and build their future in a progressive India. The educated ones did that long back but we need to get the masses back into the mainstream.
