Within two months of the terrible tragedy at Naina Devi temple in Himachal Pradesh, at least 147 people have lost their lives in a stampede at Chamunda Devi temple in Jodhpur.

At least 147 people have been killed and over 425 injured in a major stampede at the Chamunda Devi Temple in Jodhpur, Rajasthan, where devotees had gathered in large numbers on the occasion of the start of Navaratri.

A police official said there is difficulty in giving the exact figures as most of the people have taken the dead bodies of their near and dear ones fearing post-mortem. [IBN Live]

No words of comfort can be enough for those who have lost their loved ones in this horrific tragedy. Looking at some of the early pictures of the stampeded tells the same story of government apathy and mismanagement. First of all there are never enough preparations to manage crowds of such magnitude. Then the local governments seem to be totally unprepared to deal with any such tragedy with never sufficient ambulances, first aid personnel that could save many lives.

Even worse is the response from the public that seem to demand no accountability from the government.

PS: Talking of accountability, can Indian media please stop creating headlines with bad pun? It is just getting sickening day by day. Why would IBN call this temple as “Temple of Doom“? Lifted straight from “Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom” and in very poor taste.
