Thank you Rumi for you lovely piece. QH was, is and shall remain the greatest writer ever. Her writings tell us about our origins and linkages, cultural, emotional and historical, which , very unfortunately, we are being made to forget by forces beyond our control.

Raza bhai salam. ainee apa opened many unlocked doors and helped me overcome the ignorance of my people, both the era gone and existing, with her small details and beautiful narration i would go on reading with frustration either in english or hindi, hoping if given one chance in past i would have taken hafiz ji more seriously. irrespective of his beatings n curses. what a loss.

open the page and im transformed back to my village, smelling the "aam ka dharakth", or just see "mian" walking with hukka, open breeze of my land,so pure and unbroken, certainly miss hyder gives me in her writings the people n faces i so desperatly look for.

Adnan, Mahi and Mohib

Many thanks for your comments and appreciation. It is indeed a pleasure that there are people in the blogosphere who appreciate the nuances of literature. Alas Ainee is not that well known in India other than the high brow cultured individuals and the Urdu readers. She has been translated but not in the manner that she should have been and her own translations are selective.

This is a pity since she symbolizes the composite culture that the nationalist movement had envisioned for India and she provides the finest literary and cultural backdrop to what India is today.

Awesome!

Thanks a lot, Raza saahab, for sharing this beautiful piece with us. Also, please do visit Lucknow but don't be surprised if you find it different from the nostalgic memories of people like Ainee aapa. Lucknow has changed a lot.

Great post. I share the sentiment about Aakhir-e-shab ke hamsafar. Aag ka Darya is a magnum opus and I don’t know how many times I have read and re-read particular chapters on Oudh, the era of Asifuddaula, the journeys of Manoranjan dutt to Lucknow, lives of Gautam Neelambar and Cyril, and yes, Kamal Haider Raza. Kaar-e-Jahaan daraaz hai…is also wonderful.
In a way she was fortunate that she had both Shia and Sunni influence from her parents.
